“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion?
Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life.
I'll show you how to take a real rest.
Walk with me and work with me–watch how I do it.
Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
Keep company with me and learn to live freely and lightly. “
Matthew 11:28, The Message
Increasingly, churches and church leaders are recognizing the hazards of ceaseless ministry, and the ancient idea of a sabbath rest is being recovered by many churches. Of course, there are challenges to be overcome if a sabbatical is to be effective – both for the church and its pastor, and this workshop from the Wahl Centre seeks to address those issues.
A ministry sabbatical has the potential to be life-transforming and ministry-renewing if careful planning takes place to address such issues as:
-length of sabbatical
-church leadership during the sabbatical
-development of a sabbatical plan
-evaluation and transparency/accountability
-and much more.
Pastor Sam Nikkel (McKernan Baptist Church), Dr. Ray Seutter (psychologist) and Dr. David Williams (Taylor president, theologian/ethicist) are passionate about serving those in pastoral ministry. Workshop sessions will cover the theology of rest, and will explore the practical issues that need to be considered. Topics will also include the common pitfalls of ministry, such as isolation and stress, and focus on some best practices to foster long-term ministry health. Perhaps more importantly, workshop participants will have an opportunity to participate in a caring community of fellow pastors, for discussion, prayer and peer support.
The next Sabbatical Preparation Workshop will take place on May 8, 2014 in Edmonton. The registration cost is just $65 and includes a day-long workshop (including lunch) and resource materials, and spouses are welcome and encouraged to attend for only an additional $20 cost. Contact a member of the team to express your interest and to confirm your participation, or register online using the "Register Now" button below.
Could it be that you know of someone in ministry who would benefit from this ministry of refreshing, encouraging support and mentorship? Perhaps you could share this event with them, and we have also prepared a simple brochure that you can print or email to a friend.
